Okay, here we go: MYTH #1: IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME

=====

Totally false. If you build it no one will come. If you build it – you built it. You’ve got something.

It’s just like if you set a piece of candy out. No that won’t work because kids will eat it. Okay, it’s like that.

You set something up, a lemonade stand in the front yard. You know, unless you tell someone you’re open for business or unless there’s someone standing behind and waving people in… I’m sorry you’re just not going to get any business.

You might get some random onsie-twosies, but basically you’re invisible.

And you will stay invisible until you make yourself invisible and that’s how it works.

A majority of the people rely solely on the stuff like showing up on Google, or Bind, or Yahoo. Mostly Google. And that can work for the most part. I have some sites where that is the sole source of traffic to them. The only problem is, if Google does something and changes the algorithm to where they suddenly don’t like the way you’re doing stuff…

Well, guess what? You disappear.

Your 300 hits a day turns to nothing. It’s not the greatest strategy, but as long as you’re on the up and up and producing good content, you really shouldn’t have too much to worry about. So that should be a fine point to work with and really what you should aim for if you’re just starting out.

Just try – try to make it where you have a focused point about something about what you think or have evidence about what you think people will care about and you’ll be okay.

So don’t worry about it too much. But certainly, don’t abuse it.

There’s paid traffic after that, whether that’s ads or Paid Discovery at StumbledUpon, which I’ve experimented with… and *meeehhh* I had mediocre results. I traded 25 cents for 26 cents. It’s got some potential with tweaking.

You can do images, Google News, Bing News, social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, allthat jazz. Instagram, Pinterest, really whatever’s relevant to whatever you’re doing at the time.

The point is. If you built it, they will not come. You have to help them come.

There you go. There’s that myth explained at least.
